Oscar Looks: Who Shined (And Didn’t) Last Night

At the 83rd Annual Academy Awards last night, it was all about red, sequins and metallics. Here are the looks that made Style Gals think, “Movie star Red Carpet Glamour,” the ones that get an honorable mention and the ones that just missed the mark for the big night.

The Winners

Gwyneth Paltrow: The Country Strong star wore a shimmery, stunning Calvin Klein dress that had liquid-like movement. Looking incredibly statuesque, Gwyneth truly gave golden boy Oscar a run for his money.

Michelle Williams: Styled to perfection in a white Chanel gown, Michelle showed how covering up can still be sexy.

Hailee Steinfeld: The Oscar nominee was fresh and youthful in a tea-length tulle Marchesa dress embellished with crystals, paired with a diamond-and-platinum Fred Leighton headband. Kudos to her handlers for making her look uber-girly, ladylike and age-appropriate! FYI: This 14-year-old wonder sketched her dress and worked with the designers of Marchesa to create her own red carpet look. Truly talented!

Anne Hathaway: The great thing about hosting the Oscars? You get to change a zillion times. Anne smartly chose Rachel Zoe to style her, and every dress was gorgeous!

Helen Mirren: Always in style, Helen’s looked like perfection in a fitted gunmetal dress by British designer Vivienne Westwood.

Our Honorable Mentions

Jennifer Hudson: Looked super svelte in an orange Versace gown with plunging neckline.

Mandy Moore: Again the shoulder reigned with this off-the-shoulder gold-beaded illusion gown by Monique L’huillier, paired with Chopard jewels.

Cate Blanchett: We loved the structured shoulder on her Givenchy gown.

We Liked It, But…

Mila Kunis: Her pale lavender Elie Saab gown was lovely and feminine, but didn’t strike us as a red carpet look. Whoever’s styling her should really focus on “show stopping” colors. They have a good eye for what’s current and a grasp on hot designers, but there is definitely a difference between a great dress and a dress that makes a “red carpet” statement.

We Love You, But Not Your Dress!

Reese Witherspoon: She wore the Armani Prive black and white strapless gown just fine, as it was a vintage-looking “fashion moment.” However, we would have loved to see you in something pretty, sexy and maybe in pink?

Nicole Kidman: Her Dior dress with a peplum around the waist looked a little too stiff and formal.

Hilary Swank: She looked gorgeous in a silvery strapless feathered Gucci gown, but feathers have had their day on the red carpet…

Halle Berry: We would have loved to see you in a stronger color than your pale Marchesa corset gown with organza and silk tulle ruffles.

Melissa Leo: Her Marc Bouwer dress with bits of mirror on it didn’t move. It was way too stiff for the new Academy Award winner.
