Some people are so good we follow them everywhere. Badass Queen Latifah has us bingeing each weekend to catch up on episodes of The Equalizer. We love seeing her coolly chase down evil-doers while rocking leather and toting a gun.

Robyn McCall is a mysterious woman with a murky past who uses her enormous knowledge to help those who have nowhere else to turn. Most people think of McCall as a regular single mother who quietly raises her teenage daughter. But we viewers know she is “The Equalizer,” an unknown guardian angel and supporter of the oppressed who is tenacious in her search for atonement, to a small circle of people who can be trusted.

We’ve always wondered why McCall is hesitant to on the family business to her daughter, Delilah. Of course, we got the answer from the Queen herself!

“As a parent, you want to prepare your child for the world. But at the same time, you just don’t want the world near your kid. You just want them to be as a child for as long as they can,” Queen Latifah tells the DivaGals. “The more you know about what’s out there, the more you want to shelter and protect them. I think that’s what McCall has done for quite some time. She wanted to separate her worlds, and she’s been very uncomfortable with the fact that all the walls are falling down and everything is emerging. It was something she was able to control for a very long time.”

But there comes a point where you have to give your children the tools they need to survive, and then let them go, which is why she allowed her bestie Melody to train Delilah. “Her daughter has to protect herself, and we’re seeing how that plays out in the show and how challenging it’s going to be. But I think we’ve also enjoyed watching how that’s changed the show’s dynamic.”

Catch the next new episode of The Equalizer on April 16. When a Venezuelan migrant is accused of murdering a prominent congresswoman whom he and his wife were staying with, McCall and the team work to uncover whether or not he was involved. Meanwhile, Aunt Vi tries to look after a student who seems to be experiencing distress at home.
