GIrl, do you have a jar of coconut oil in your cabinet? You’re stashing a natural goldmine in there. Coconut oil is one of the most diverse products available, it’s reasonably priced (especially for all that it does) and can be purchased pretty much anywhere.

Not only does coconut oil smell amazing, which can instantly conjure up mental images of us lying on a beach in the tropics, it offers an array of health benefits from your head to your toes.

Check out just some of our favorite amazing uses for coconut oil.

Skincare. Suffer from any kind of dry or irritated skin? Coconut oil is a complete savior. The best time for using coconut oil is straight after a bath or shower. You should make sure your body has been patted dry with a towel — not completely dry — but if you’re still too wet it keeps the oil on the surface, and you need the oil to absorb. Not only will coconut oil create an immediate soothing effect on the skin and feel lush when youΓÇÖre applying it, but it also leaves your skin feeling silky smooth for days, without containing harsh chemicals as some traditional moisturizers do. You can use coconut oil on your body and it’s gentle enough to use on your face. Feel free to use it as an ingredient in DIY face masks and natural night creams.

Haircare. When you’re a brown gal, you may have hair like ours that just drinks up moisture. Coconut oil makes a great hair product and can be used as a luxury hair conditioner.┬á Wash your hair in the shower, and then lather on a coat of coconut oil generously. You should leave it on, depending on how dry your hair is, anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours. Some people even prefer to leave coconut oil in their hair overnight wrapped in a towel. Wash it out, or leave a small amount in to continue conditioning your hair throughout the day.

Mouthwash. Coconut oil contains amazing anti-bacterial properties, so it’s a fabulous product to use as a mouthwash or may be useful for oil pulling,  a technique used to clear out bacteria from the mouth and body. Coconut oil is recommended as the best oil to use. If you don’t like putting mouthwash in your mouth because of the chemicals, then coconut oil is a great natural alternative that can leave the mouth feeling clean and even whiten teeth.

After sun. Coconut oil is soothing on the skin, so it makes a great after sun treatment — especially if itΓÇÖs cool and kept in a semi-hardened state (you don’t want it to be too liquidy). However, itΓÇÖs never okay to use coconut oil as a sunscreen (as if any brown gal would!).

In your diet. Coconut oil is getting a new joie de vivre in the low carb revolution. As people look to curb using carbohydrates as their main source of fuel and tap into their fat as a main energy source, more and more recipes are using coconut oil’s high saturated fat content to pad out their drinks and meals. Coconut oil contains a type of fats called medium chain triglycerides (MCTS for short), which are easily digested and a great instant source of energy, which can help stave off hunger. Check with your doctor before making radical changes in your diet.
