TV DIVAGAL! Chris Parnell’s Advice for New SNL Star Sasheer Zamata – EXCLUSIVE!By Delaina Dixon | January 20, 2014 | Entertainment
Sasheer Zamata had her first day — or should I say night — on the job Saturday evening. As the first black actress to join the Saturday Night Live crew since 2007, the first day had to be nerve-wracking ΓÇô especially in front of millions on live TV!
Sasheer held her own playing Rihanna in a Blossom reboot (let the endless parade of portraying black female celebs begin!); Uncle Larry’s new girlfriend at a recreation of host/musical guest Drake‘s Bar Mitzvah (the Degrassi High alum revealed he’s black and Jewish); and a teen girl who’s dad was embarrassing her at her slumber party. Our own fave skit Sasheer pulled off for the night? Delivering the chorus “Resolution, Revolution” anthem as three guys tried to keep theirs, but failed by Jan. 18.
TV DivaGal sat down exclusively with SNL alum Chris Parnell at the ABC Winter Press Tour in Pasadena. Now starring on The Neighbors, Chris shared his words of wisdom for Sasheer with me exclusively.
“Be brave and bold and confident in your talent that got you there in the first place,” Chris declared. “Get all your scripts before the table read on Wednesday, and go over them; be familiar with what all your parts are, try to make some quick choices if you can. That way when you’re at the table read, you’ll be able to make a better impression. That’s important for a lot of reasons, but the main one is because that’s where the piece gets sold to the room and Lorne [Michaels, the show’s creator], everybody. And if it does well there, that’s how it’s going to have the best shot of getting on air, or at least to the dress rehearsal.”
Amazing advice. We’re rooting for your Sasheer, and can’t wait for you to create signature characters that spawn a million spin-off movies!
Catch Chris on The Neighbors Fridays 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
