If you haven’t heard, Wentworth Miller, the alum star of Prison Break, came out yesterday.
Wentworth, who’s been spending much more time behind the camera (where I believe he always wanted to be), announced in a letter to the Russia film festival that while he was flattered to be invited to attend, being a gay man, he had to decline. Russia has some serious anti-gay laws currently in play.
I’ve actually known about Wentworth’s sexual orientation for some time (he went to school with a friend of mine), but that’s never stopped me from crushing on Wentworth. I loved when he played Michael Scofield, swooning as Michael and Dr. Sara’s love story unfolded behind bars on the series.
If you’re surprised Wentworth would come out in a letter (sounds like a song lyric), don’t be. He’s always been pretty chill about revealing her personal life — and on his own dam schedule. While at Princeton in the nineties, he posted a cartoon in college of outgoing professor Dr. Cornel West that some thought equated with slavery. Wentworth caused a ruckus on campus, but never played the race card to show he meant no harm.
Only years later, when auditioning for the 2003 film The Human Stain, in which the lead character of mixed heritage pretends to be white, did Wentworth reveal that he is indeed, of mixed heritage himself (read: he’s black!).
Standing up for what you believe in in your own way? Wentworth, kinda even dig yah a little more now.
