TV DIVAGAL's Show You Gotta Watch: Face Off

TV DivaGal loves a good TV make-up lesson. That’s why Syfy’s new series Face Off is right up my alley, even though the only time I’d be pulling out these tools of the trade is on Halloween.

The new reality competition series follows 12 special effects designers who can turn the cutest models into something hideous… and win immunity to boot.

The show is a cross between Top Chef — as contestants are given quickfire challenges that can score them immunity for the week — and Project Runway; these bona fide artists use unexpected materials and the animal kingdom for inspiration in their first challenges.

Yes, there are bickering contestants, self-doubt, delusions of grandeur and beads of sweat as the last two standing wait to hear who’s been eliminated.

Still it’s worth those cliche competition moments to see these contestants’ final products, which are pretty incredible, if not stomach-churning.

And in this world, that’s a compliment.

Face Off premieres Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 10 p.m. on Syfy.
