Every October Lifetime broadcasts a moving production to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For this year’s broadcast, Five,┬á the network tapped five powerhouse celebrities: Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Penelope Spheeris, Alicia Keys and Patty Jenkins to direct moving stories of women who battle with breast cancer.
The pieces are all connected through Pearl, a young girl who encounters breast cancer at an early age. The five vignettes address the complications of the disease and how it affects those closest to the women. Some of those people respond with fear, others with heartache and many with genuine compassion.
Stack up on tissues, you will need them while watching Five. The story that moved me the most stars character actress Jenifer Lewis as a dramatic mother who learns that her youngest daughter, played by Rosario Dawson, has breast cancer. As the child of a sassy black mama who would do anything for her kids, I shed tears of gratitude over one line that Jenifer delivers. It will make you pick up the phone and thank your mom for being there for you; even when you didn’t think you needed her.
Five, the broadcast event, airs Monday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime. For more information, visit myLifetime.com.
