Contributing reporter Tsadiqwah Scarville gets the scoop on Laverne Cox, the transgendered female star of Orange Is the New Black, as she represents in the Big Apple!
Orange is the New Black and Time cover star Laverne Cox stood proud and fierce as the Grand Marshal of the New York City Pride March last month. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio led the march down Fifth Avenue from midtown Manhattan to the West Village as spectators of all walks of life lined the streets for lavish costumes and pulsating performances!
Laverne recently gave an interview to TakePart Live on Pivot TV where she explained why her character is resonating with so many people. “Our writers are so brilliant and I think they do a really good job of making Sophia just one of the girls.┬áShe has specific issues that relate to her being transgendered, but she deals with the same things that everyone else deals with: she’s incarcerated, she has a family on the outside that she’s negotiating, and does she have a relationship with the family? That’s not a transgendered issue, that’s a human issue.”
Cox’s castmates from the Netflix hit series: Yael Stone, Dascha Polanco, Danielle Brooks, Barbara Rosenblat and Samira Wiley all celebrated on board the showΓÇÖs Litchfield Correctional Facility float.
