TV SUMMER TOUR ’14: Gotham’s Brown Girls Are On Both Sides of The Law!

FoxΓÇÖs new series Gotham, which chronicles the city before Batman charged himself to clean up crime, is so going there. The cast has not one, but three ladies of distinctive hue ΓÇô two of which the DivaGals met at a private screening of the series in New York City last month.
Victoria Cartagena plays detective Renee Montega. She’s got “an interesting past” with Detective James Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean – and we don’t mean the two were swapping man woes. “I can’t wait to see how their relationship develops,” Victoria exclaimed to us. The native Philadelphian loves to run and tells us as a Latina woman, sometimes it’s hard to get her hair “flat” for her role. The key is getting it professionally done and keeping it in check while she’s on set.
Zabryna Guevara is Sarah Essen, captain of the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad. As the boss of straight-laced Gordon and his unconventional (and sometimes unhinged) partner Harvey Bullock, Zabryna assured us that SarahΓÇÖs got what it takes to keep these boys in line. Much like the DivaGals, sheΓÇÖs pleased to see the show’s┬á diverse cast on TV.
And then thereΓÇÖs Ms. Jada Pinkett-Smith. She plays badass Fish Mooney, a Gotham crime boss. The character was created for the TV series, showrunners shared at Gotham’s FOX TCA panel on Sunday. Jada explained that her character is a mix of Mexican drug lord Griselda Blanco and the character of reclusive starlet Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard. Hair is everything, and Fish makes it very clear never to mess with the ΓÇÿdo — “if I bought, itΓÇÖs mine” is definitely one of her mottos!
Whether they are playing it good, evil — or a bit of both, Gotham gets a star for making sure that this town reps every hue.
Gotham Premieres Monday, Sept. 22 on FOX.
