TV SUMMER TOUR ΓÇÖ14: Jane The Virgin Is Funny (Please Spread the Word!)

The landscape of The CW has changed since TV DivaGal fell in love with Gossip Girl seven years ago! Not that IΓÇÖm complaining ΓÇô now it’s lots of hunky stars running around in superhero costumes!

Still, itΓÇÖs nice to see that the network is giving us back some good girly programing with its newest offering Jane The Virgin. The story centers around Jane (with the fabulous Gina Rodriguez in the title role), a 20-something that is saving herself for marriage. And then she is accidentally artificially inseminated. To everyoneΓÇÖs surprise, she agrees to carry the baby for a couple that doesnΓÇÖt have another chance to create life. So soapy!

“It’s a show that will appeal to so many people, and as the women always talk about, it’s a Korean story, it’s a Latino story, it’s a human story,” declared executive producer Ben Silverman, who brought the hugely successful Ugly Betty to ABC, during the series’ press panel last Friday.

“At the end of the day, I see The CW marketing this brilliantly because itΓÇÖs laugh-out loud funny. There are elements in the show that are super hysterical and make you laugh. There’s not a lot of time where I’m watching a 90th take on our cut on something and giggling,” Ben admitted. ΓÇ£Hopefully, we get that contagious feeling from our community of people who are watching.”

Ben believes that this show, which features a predominantly Latino cast, can become a hit via word of mouth. “The best calling card for this is the pilot. The show itself is so strong and so dynamic, and so I think that we just need to get the word out,” he shared. “I just think it’s gotta be ‘And she told two friends and he told two friends and they told two friends’.” He also believes the network’s strong social media presence will push the show forward. “ThatΓÇÖs how weΓÇÖll build our audience,ΓÇ¥ Silverman declared.
