Syfy wants to take you back to the present with its mini-series Ascension. There’s this ship with a community who has been on board for the past 50 years, and they have their first murder. Confused? Ascension star Brandon P. Bell (pictured right) did a pretty good job breaking it all down when we met him at the Syfy holiday party. What he told us below should be enough reason to watch — plus he ain’t hard on the eyes. Watch the first part of Ascension‘s 3-night miniseries tonight at 9 p.m. on Syfy.
What is Ascension about?
In my opinion, it’s historical fiction. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy did have discussions with NASA about sending a lot of people in to test out long-term space travel. Given the Cuban missile crisis, they nixed it. Ascension, in my opinion is the “What if.” We’re on a 100-year journey to propagate a new planet, just in case Earth goes to hell.
Where does the story begin tonight?
What ticks everything off is there is a murder on board. There has never been a murder before. There are no weapons. I play Oren Gault, who is the commanding officer of the ship Ascension. My character has to investigate this murder, with no experience, obviously. It makes everyone question the purpose of the ship.
How much has time changed in the last 50 years since the ship set sail?
They have no cultural references, no civil or women’s rights, no rock ‘n roll. To see how people have evolved on the ship is very interesting. It really has a lot of social relevant themes. The biggest thing besides race is class. There’s a lower deck and an upper deck. My character was born in the lower deck, but rose to the ranks to the upper.
Watch it. I think you’ll enjoy it.
