BEEF is a compelling melodrama series currently streaming on Netflix. The gripping dark comedy centers on a road rage incident that reaches unprecedented heights of pettiness that has far-reaching effects on everyone it encounters. It’s an unpredictable, touching, funny and cautionary tale.

We attended a wellness event on behalf of BEEF that included light bites, fresh juices and various interactive experiences to destress. That included pastel paint therapy that allowed us to channel our trauma into art and confessional to reveal our inner demons, as well a whack-a-mole (no explanation needed!). There was also a panel discussion about the challenges for first-generation Asian Americans, which BEEF explores.

Here’s the story: a mild driving incident followed by the raising of the middle finger starts the story and introduces us to our lead characters, Ali Wong (Amy) and Stephen Lui (Danny). We not only unpack their rage we also gaze into the many nuanced and cultural aspects of their family interactions. We see how Wong’s textbook-perfect life isn’t working out as it should and how Yeun’s idea of following his parents’ rules is failing.
We observe several incredibly creative brand-new methods for exacting vengeance. Old connections, duties to one’s family’s traditional beliefs and doing the right thing, even if it doesn’t necessarily mean doing it for you, are all fascinating ideas that contrast nicely with the sharp spikes in psychotic behavior they cause in one another. They’re enraged with everyone, including each other and themselves. Before the incident, it’s apparent that both Amy and Danny were on the path of self-destruction. I don’t want to ruin it for you but this binge-worthy series definitely earned its 100 points on Rotten Tomatoes.
Enjoy BEEF and make sure you take a few minutes each day to decompress and exhale before you gas up and hit the road.
