When I first watched the movie Drumline in 2002, I couldn’t get enough of the dazzling showmanship of the bands performing ΓÇô and I realized just how charismatic Nick Cannon can be on screen.
Now, 12 years later, VH1 is bringing us Drumline: A New Beat. TV DivaGal saw a screening last week and loved it! The twist, the person with everything to prove on the line is Dani, a girl.
Played by Alexandra Shipp (who is also starring as Aaliyah in Lifetime’s upcoming movie), Dani defies her parents to attend Atlanta A&T University and pursue her dream ΓÇô playing on the Panthers’ drumline senate and one day becoming lead captain. Of course, her dreams become a real-life challenge when the existing drummers don’t want a girl on the front line, and she’s romantically tangled with Jayven, her biggest competition (but seriously, who could resist Jordan Calloway’s abs?).
The Panthers haven’t won a championship in years ΓÇô enter Dr. Sean Taylor (Leonard Roberts reprising his role from the first movie), who has to reinvigorate the team to A) to beat his own brother, head coach of A&T’s biggest band rival, and B) settle a love triangle between the two siblings and the woman that came between them, Dean Nia Phillips (Letoya Luckett).
And then there’s Nick Cannon, back as Devon Miles. While he’s only in the latter half of the telefilm, he hasn’t lost any of that charm.
Which is why watching Drumline: A New Beat, is a charming way to spend two hours tonight.
Drumline: A New Beat airs Monday, Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. on VH1.
