Hey DivaGals! There’s a new vocal competition series on TV tonight, and it’s not like anything you’ve seen. On One Shot, the new BET series premiering tonight, this judging team is looking for the next hip-hop star that has charisma, sass and can drop mad rhymes.
This is a passion project for legendary music journalist and host Sway Calloway, who dishes it on Sway In The Morning. He brought the concept to life with several power players in the business, which includes producer Mike Smith and music icons Kxng Crooked and King Tech.
“It’s good when you start something and finish it,” Sway told the DivaGals exclusively at a VIP screening of the series first episode last night. Sway explained that One Shot started as a digital project he and his pals were set to bankroll themselves. But when thousands showed up to audition for their shot, they knew it was a biggest concept. Partnering with Jarret Creative and BET, they were able to bring this emotional journey to our TV screens. “These kids needed a platform and it grew from there,” Sway said, adding that he’s so happy BET got behind it.
The series seeks talent in four cities: Chicago, Miami, Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta, where the premiere episode takes place. It’s interesting to see who comes out to audition, and the personal stories they share that shape their rhymes. “We really focused on talent … and it doesn’t have a gender or skin color,” Sway shared with the crowd. Bringing a different look and feel to the hip-hop world makes Sway and the crew truly proud.
