I recently took a weekend trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to celebrate Mardi Gras season — and I packed smart.
Instead of overstuffing my suitcase, I brought six essentials that worked overtime. The key? Versatile personality pieces that could be easily layered for majorly effortless looks.
The six essentials:
• Wide-Leg Denim: The ultimate cool-girl staple.
• Plaid Oversized Blazer: Structured, versatile, and instant polish.
• Bubble Skirt: Playful volume adds a fresh and fun vibe.
• Black Midi Dress: A true wardrobe workhorse.
• White Sleeveless Button-Down: Crisp, clean, and endlessly layerable.
• Utility Jacket: A modern outer layer.

Parade-Ready Chic

My first Mardi Gras parade was literally steps away from where I stayed — the Hotel Indigo Baton Rouge Downtown by IHG — and I was ready. I paired the wide-leg denim with my plaid jacket, and it was the perfect balance of comfort and style for catching beads and soaking up the festive energy.
The colorful floats rolled by, performers danced through the streets, and I got fully into the vibe. Yes, I caught beads. Yes, I wore them proudly. When in Louisiana, you commit.
Brunch, But Make It Layered

Baton Rouge weather does what it wants — we’re talking 60 to 75 degrees in a single day — so layering was non-negotiable.
For Sunday brunch at The Gregory inside The Watermark Hotel, I styled an Urban Revivo bubble skirt with my white sleeveless blouse, layered under a pinstriped long-sleeve button-down and topped with my olive utility jacket. Burgundy platform sneakers grounded the look and kept it practical for walking around downtown.
By afternoon, one layer came off for photos at the ball — proof that a good outfit should evolve with the day.
Meetings With Style

Monday meant meetings, but that didn’t mean sacrificing fashion.
I returned to my trusty plaid blazer, this time pairing it with the black midi dress for breakfast at Zeeland St., a Black-owned gem that’s as flavorful as it is welcoming. The look carried me seamlessly to lattes at The Vintage — a nostalgic, vibey coffee shop that feels like stepping into another era — and then to a sit-down with local historian Byron Washington back at the hotel.
The jacket pulled everything together. Tailored, polished, and easy.
Dinner, Elevated

Dinner that evening took me to SouLou, a Cajun-American restaurant serving up bold Louisiana flavors. I styled wide-leg denim with a sleeveless black wrap blouse featuring subtle gold striping and finished the look with the olive utility jacket.
It was relaxed but refined — perfect for great food and even better conversation.
A Scholarly Moment

A visit to the Old State Capitol called for something a little more collegiate. I layered my AKA Sorority Girl tee over the white blouse and paired it with denim for a look that felt smart, stylish, and personal.
Six pieces. Multiple looks. One fabulous weekend in Baton Rouge. DivaGals, sometimes packing light makes the boldest statement.
