What We’re Watching Tonight: Project Runway! Plus: PR Winner Jhoan Sebastian Grey’s New Bluprint Series!
By Delaina Dixon | January 2, 2020 | Entertainment, LifestyleDivas, no more fashion withdrawal — Project Runway returns to Bravo with a new episode tonight.
We caught up with last season’s winner Jhoan Sebastian Grey who tells us everything about his new series Fashion Sewing with Jhoan Sebastian Grey, now streaming on Bluprint.
What went through your mind when you were announced the winner?
The first initial feeling was it felt like my body went into slow motion and the world stopped. What seemed like an eternity was probably 2.2 seconds. Once I knocked off the cobwebs, the win really validated my confidence in my craft and art as a designer. I am extremely hard on myself and my own worst critic. I was extremely grateful for my friends and family who believed in me. It took me a good couple of days to wrap my head around winning the competition.
On your new Bluprint series we learn about you making a bespoke skirt. Why did you pick that to teach?
My Bluprint crafted bespoke skirt was very thoughtful in design. I love to see well-fitted skirts on women. It’s such a feminine touch. This particular design was created with my mother in mind. My mother loves skirts. When we would vacation in Cartagena in the summer months my mom would wear these beautiful free-flowing skirts. She looked so mystical and beautiful. The turquoise color palette was chosen from the dreamlike blue tones of the ocean off Cartagena.
What else will we learn about you and see in the Bluprint class?
On the series with Bluprint you will find me talking about conceptualization, putting inspiration into your design, making patterns and different draping techniques. Doing this series versus the grind and stress of Project Runway is very different. I tend to be pretty playful and have fun. I hope you see more of this in my Bluprint Series.
Who are your front lead favorites on the new season of Project Runway?
This is really a tough question. My two front runners are Victoria Cocieru and Nancy Volpe-Beringer. I just really love their design aesthetic.
What advice would you give to anyone who wants to compete on Project Runway?
Do it! One of my favorite quotes comes from Robin Sharma: “Lean into your fears. Go out to your edges. Because the place where your greatest limits live is also the place where your greatest growth lies.” You will never have an opportunity like this. This is a chance of a lifetime and opportunities like this only happen to a small percentage of the population.
Are you working on a new collection for 2020? What is its theme and what kind of pieces?
I have been working for the past several months on my 2021 collection entitled, “Reconstructed Legacy: Honoring My Past.” This line pays homage to my grandfather who was a tailor in Colombia. Several pieces will be highlighted with detail to the tailoring of several pieces. I will be presenting my collection at New York Fashion Week in February. Thank you to the sponsorship of Andres Gonzales and Carlos Junquera with the Fashion For A Cause Foundation.
Project Runway airs on Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. on Bravo.
