Who To Watch: Actor Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine In ‘Washington Black’ And More

An actor you absolutely must keep in your viewfinder: Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine—a masterful storyteller whose presence and quiet power are reshaping television and film in ways both cinematic and soulful.

Ntare first murmured into our consciousness in shows like Heroes (as the prophetic Usutu) and Treme (as Jacques Jhoni), then deepened his craft in The Knick, Bosch, The Riches, ER, CSI, and Law & Order—every role a lesson in restraint and nuance.

His unforgettable portrayal of Ronnie Davis in Showtime’s The Chi earned praise from The New York Times, Variety, and Roger Ebert, who noted his ability to balance fragility and ferocity with unmatched subtlety.

Onscreen, he moved seamlessly into The Lincoln Lawyer as Detective Raymond Griggs, then Dead Ringers opposite Rachel Weisz, and you’ll see him smoldering as he embodies the troubled arsonist Freddy Fasano in AppleTV+’s Smoke, and Blessing Kamara alongside Michael C. Hall in Dexter: Resurrection—a stunning tonal shift, perfect for showcasing his chameleonic depth.

You will also find him in films like Blood Diamond, Queen of Katwe, Farewell Amor (for which he won Best Actor at the Durban International Film Festival), Tazmanian Devil, and Dirt. Each performance was carried out with emotional precision and reflective gravity.

What truly fascinates is the man’s commitment to storytelling across mediums—his award-winning documentary Memories of Love Returned, executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, is a spiritual excavation of memory, identity, and legacy in postcolonial Uganda.

Ntare Mwine is not just an actor; he’s a cultural vessel, carrying stories across generations and boundaries. Whether he’s inhabiting a haunted detective or capturing the silent dignity of everyday loss, he moves with intention—and invites us to listen.

Keep watching. He’s just getting started.
