Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming A Space premieres today on PBS and PBS.org! The new biography chronicles the life of the trailblazing writer and anthropologist. Hurston was unapologetic in her work, traveling alone in the deep South to capture Black folklore that she would write in authentic African American vernacular. Best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston is enjoying a resurgence with the recent release of her book, Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo,” sharing her interviews with Cudjo Lewis, one of the last known surviving Africans of the slave ship Clotilda. Watch our interview with director Tracy Heather Strain to learn more about this incredible woman.
Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming A Space premieres on AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, Jan. 17, 9 p.m. ET on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS Video app.
