Soft You 2026: Moving Through Winter, Gently

I’ll be honest, I hate the cold. And when it rolls in every winter, I wonder why I haven’t moved to a much warmer climate or become a snowbird with a condo in Miami.

Life doesn’t stop when it’s cold outside, especially when it comes to daily wellness routines, though sometimes, getting outside feels like a workout. So let’s make that work for us.  Movement doesn’t have to stop because it’s cold—it simply needs to be more intentional. And in winter, the most practical forms of movement often happen right outside our door. Let’s dive (hello, snowbank!) right in.

Snow Counts as Weighted Resistance (Yes, Really)

Clearing snow, brushing off your car, or navigating icy sidewalks all count as moderate physical activity. Short bursts of movement throughout the day add up—especially when your body is already working to stay warm.

Snowy Day Movements That Count

Shoveling snow engages your legs, core, and arms—but only when done right. Bend your knees, keep your core engaged, and take frequent breaks.

Clearing your car is an upper-body movement. Brushing snow from your car engages your shoulders and arms and improves mobility.

Snowball tossing, walking through fresh snowfall, or building a snowman all engage muscles while keeping movement light and joyful.

Good news: our bodies naturally use more energy in the cold (yes, you’re gearing for summer fun just by walking out the door!).  That doesn’t mean you need to do more—it means small, consistent movements matter.

Dress warmly. Move gently. Rest when needed. And let winter be part of your rhythm—not an obstacle.
