More juice from TCA Press Tour Summer 2019! Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Middle) has a habit of starring in sitcoms that run many years. So, it’s quite possible that her latest series, Carol’s Second Act in which she plays an ex-school teacher who is on her way to becoming a doctor, will have a nice solid run, too!

“From your lips to God’s ears,” says Ito Aghayere (The Blacklist, pictured far left), who plays Dr. Maya Jacobs, Carol’s no-nonsense boss,  at the prospect of a lengthy sitcom run “[My character] is a high-strung, super-efficient doctor who knows what she’s doing. She wants every intern to be on her level. She loves her job and her hospital, but she runs a tight ship!”

Ito says she was drawn to playing Maya because it’s fun to see her become friends with someone like Carol. “[She’s] bubbly and has a stream of consciousness approach so, there’s a beautiful kind of exchange between us.”

Handling medical terms is no problem for Aghayere because she has doctors and nurses in her family, one of whom was a chief resident. “There were a lot of points of interest in her experience,” Ito shares.

Schedules permitting, Ito may be involved in White Devils, an upcoming film by her boyfriend Leon Hendricks III (Two Sentence Horror Stories). The story details a father taking his two sons into the woods where he wants to raise them after his family has an altercation with the police that results in the death of his wife and their mother. “After a few years, the boys decide to venture out and when they do, they find an unconscious white girl and that’s where the story unfolds.” Intense!

Away from work, Ito works with the organization Girls On The Run, which empowers young women.

“This past spring and summer, I trained about 16 girls over 12 weeks to run a 5K,” Ito shares. “It’s so wonderful to see girls at week 1 saying, ‘I can’t run,’ and by week six, they’re cheering on their teammates. I remember my coach and can only hope to do for others what he did for me.”

Carol’s Second Act debuts Thursday, September 26 at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
