A Divalicious Review: Chicken for Linda!—The Demented Mother-Daughter Movie You Can’t Miss!

Color and chaos splash into every frame of Chicken for Linda!, perhaps one of the best-animated features of 2024. Directors Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach direct this insane French feature with vivid palettes of color splotches.

Chicken for Linda! might remind you of the wild playfulness of child hand-paintings. It’s not hand-drawn. It’s handpainted, a key quality to the colorful glow of each character. Our lead mother-daughter pair walk in orange and yellow respectively. Families beam in their matching hues. In long shots, smudges of paint halo them.

The playful title crawl of Chicken for Linda! laces in a hidden tragedy, but an adult viewer can fill in the blanks of what’s going on. We glimpse bits of information in colorful bubbles punctuated by the cries of an infant. Said calamity underscores the chaotic comedy of Chicken for Linda!

The film kicks off when the widowed Paulette (Clotilde Hesme) accuses her daughter Linda (Melinée Leclerc) of stealing her wedding ring. When the culprit turns out to be their cat, Paulette decides to make amends. Linda demands this penance: Make her chicken with peppers soon. The recipe also reminds Linda of her late father, whom she barely remembers.

Those are the high stakes, but there are roadblocks. Due to a city-wide strike, all the markets are closed, and the neighbors don’t have any chicken. But this mom will do anything to fulfill her promise, even if it means stealing a live chicken from a farm and igniting calamity across the neighborhood. It’s a toughie to predict the color-swirling frenetic plot from there, but I can say that these shenanigans twist into a musical number of epiphany and understanding.

Chicken for Linda! will have a wider release on April 5. GKIDS has more info on screenings.
