Denzel Washington Channels The Tragedy of Macbeth – Geek Gal’s Movie Review!
By Caroline Cao | October 7, 2021 | Entertainment
Geek Gal Caroline Cao is back doing what she does best — reviewing movies! This time, it’s Denzel Washington’s latest film The Tragedy of Macbeth.
Who is Denzel playing?
As the titular character Macbeth, Denzel Washington bears a frost-like beard against the slick monochrome of Bruno Delbonnel‘s cinematography. His Lady, played by Frances McDormand with equal parts sensually and acerbic conviction, wears all her wrinkles. The couple knows that time is unpeeling their wear and tears, Ss they must act to secure the throne they believe they do deserve. Schemes hatch and blood is shed, and Macbeth and his Lady do everything they can to tighten their grip around the blood-streaked crown.
Who created the story?
History lesson: this is adapted straight from the texts of William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon. The Tragedy of Macbeth is a Joel Coen movie without Ethan Coen, but the Coen brothers’ aesthetics of gruesome and dark comedy remains.
Is it worth watching?
The Tragedy of Macbeth embraces the glory of fantasy and magical realism. Observe how we fixate on one Witch — played by Kathryn Hunter who flexes her contortionist abilities — and how her reflection manifests the two other Witches. The editing is Morpheus as well. Whenever there’s a cut to a new angle of expressionistic shadows and exteriors, it’s almost as if they manifested out of thin air as if they suddenly existed within their shot and are gone as quick as a cut. Watching a Coen Brother Film is like watching wine poured to the rim of the chalice but stopping precisely at the point where the wine overflows.
When can I watch it?
The Tragedy of Macbeth will be available in theaters in December 2021 and comes to Apple TV in 2022. Watch the trailer below.
