Divalicious Review! The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep Is Entertaining Enough

Not a lot of attention has been given to this new adult animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. It’s a movie in the same universe as Netflix’s The Witcher, animated by the South Korea-based Studio Mir and written by Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin.
The series also hails the return of voice actor Doug Cockle, famous for voicing Geralt in the highly regarded video games. He’s paired with the reprisal of live-action actor Joey Batey as the motormouthed bard Jaskier. And what a fun pair they are. The action and look, directed by Kang Hei Chu, are decent, but they’re not as quality as Batey and Cockle’s voices playing off together, and the animation has fun showing off Jaskier’s cartoony movements.
In this iteration, Geralt and Jaskier are tasked with exploring the politics between the sirens and the humans. Tensions have broken out since a siren princess (Emily Carey) and a human prince (Camrus Johnson) have fallen in love. A human king will do anything to stop it, and the siren nation isn’t exactly pleased either.
Geralt also has a brief romance with Essi (Christina Wren), a sweet heroine and sister bard to Jaskier. If there’s one drawback, the series does not take advantage of her bard attributes quite enough and she only sings one song (one jokingly implied not to be her own song).
The movie doesn’t exactly puncture anything special, as a film itself or the franchise, but it’s a worthwhile addition and entertaining episode. It helps that it has a smart A Little Mermaid twist to the original short story it’s based on. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is a fun journey to have with Geralt and Jaskier.
