GAL APPROVED! American Son on Netflix. Our Own EIC Is Stylish!
By Delaina Dixon | November 1, 2019 | Gal ApprovedWATCH. Kerry Washington is back on our TV screens (or however you like to watch your streaming service). But there’s no designer suits and glasses of wine. In Netflix’s American Son, based on the stage play of the same name, Kerry is Kendra Ellis-Connor, the mother of a missing teenager. She discusses her son’s disappearance with a less-than-accommodating white officer, played by Jeremy Jordan. His demeanor is put to the test when her estranged husband arrives and happens to be caucasian as well. Kendra is upset, obviously, and this menage turns into a shouting match over race, stereotypes and bias, all building up to the explosive conclusion of where Jamal really is. It’s difficult to watch Kerry channel Kendra’s anxiety and pain and easy to understand why she becomes belligerent right up to the reveal. For all parents raising a child of color — especially a male one — we hope you never have to be in this predicament. American Son, airing Nov. 1 on Netflix.
CONGRATS. Our own fearless EIC Delaina Dixon can’t stop grinning over being named one of NYC’s “Most Stylist Women” in the latest issue of Art Bodega magazine. We all celebrated her hotshot at Tambaran Gallery on the Upper East Side with its publisher Rebeca Herroro; NYC socialite and philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, who is the issue’s cover girl; Mrs. New York International 2019 Luisa Duiz and Real Housewives of New York Ramona Singer.
Tagged as the “gossip columnist” Delaina, in $10,000 dollars of Beauvince Jewelry, was shot by celebrity photographer Dutch Doscher inside Tambaran Gallery on New York City’s Upper East Side. Art Bodega is hosting a gala on Nov. 8 in Miami. Featuring Mambo Babalu & Cachao Mambo All-Stars, the annual event benefits the children of Venezuela through UNICEF USA.
