A Billion Laughs In Loot

There’s a scene in Loot, Apple TV+’s billionaire comedy starring Maya Rudolph, that made me double over with laughter. Without giving too much away, it features Ruldoph’s character appearing on an episode of Hot Ones. For anyone who’s seen Ruldoph’s SNL skit portraying Beyonce on this fiery series, she takes it several steps further on Loot, and it’s hysterical.

In Loot, Rudolph plays Molly Novak (Wells), a forty-something who learns her husband’s having an affair with a woman twenty years younger. She divorces him — that’s nothing new. But since her ex is a tech mogul and she never signed a prenup, Molly gets $87 billion dollars in the settlement. That’s enough to make anyone cry just a little less over heartbreak.

Molly discovers she owns a non-profit organization that helps the unhoused in Los Angeles, which is run by Sofia Salinas (Pose’s Michaela Jaé Rodriguez), and she decides this will be her new project. At first, it’s just to fill all her free time. But meeting an interesting cast of office characters, Molly learns there’s more to life than Bugattis and Birkins.

Watching the series, I did wonder if Molly would have really forgotten how the norms live since she and her ex started with nothing? Rudolph does make Molly’s millionaire mishaps something relatable as emotions don’t have a price. Though all the shots of her lavish lifestyle certainly do. That alone is enough reason to watch.

The first three episodes of Loot now playing on AppleTV+. New episode weekly, every Friday.

Trevor: The Musical Encourages Us All To Be True To Ourselves

Trevor The Musical with Diana

In honor of Pride Month, Disney+ brings us Trevor: The Musical. This charming and eye-opening tale takes us back to 1981 and introduces us to Trevor, a young teen boy who loves the stage, performing and Diana Ross. According to his classmates, that’s weird. He befriends Pinky, the kind junior high basketball star who opens up to Trevor. But when everyone finds out that Trevor has a blossoming crush on his new pal, unkindly schoolmates can’t accept Trevor for who he truly is. It leads him to make a drastic choice that ultimately helps him embrace his authentic self. The musical is based on the Academy Award-winning short film Trevor, which launched The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth. This youthful musical cast is wonderfully diverse, with shining performances from Isabel Medina, Aryan Simhadri and more. Yasmeen Sulieman brings Diana Ross’ presence to life, as many of the iconic singer’s songs help tell the storyline. Junior high may not appreciate him, but Trevor’s light will touch all who watch.
