Produced by and starring Black female stars, these are the films to put on your viewing list this weekend!

The Silent Twins

In the new drama The Silent Twins, Black Panther‘s Letitia Wright plays June, a twin who is way too intertwined with her identical sibling. The movie is based on the lives of real-life Caribbean-British twins June and Jennifer Gibson (played by Tamara Lawrance), who lived in Wales in the 1970s and 80s. Bullied and ostracized and over a speech impediment in their predominantly white community, the girls rarely spoke to people other than each other. They also began to synchronize their lives, choosing who would get to do basic functions, like eat or breathe, first. After a drug-fueled crime spree, the girls are admitted to Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric hospital in England. They are incarcerated there for 11 years, ultimately leading to a tragedy that also delivers their freedom.

The Gibbons sisters were incredible dreamers who created countless stories and images. Their prose, pictures and poetry become an integral part of the film through. “Everything, all the animation and readings are their words,” shared Wright, who also produced the film, at a VIP screening of the film in New York City.

The Silent Twins as kids

There have been so many spooky theories about The Gibbons sisters and why they chose to live life in this manner. Through subtly haunting performances and the blessing to use the twins’ own words, this new film gives a meaningful explanation.

The Woman King

If you haven’t seen The Woman King yet, what are you waiting for? Director Gina Prince-Bythewood and star Viola Davis brilliantly bring the story of the Agojie fighters who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s, to life. It’s a two-plus-hour ride of gorgeous shots, incredible fighting and unparalleled heroism of women who helped shaped the African historical landscape. Read our full review!
