Gearing up for a new batch of medical procedural dramas? Good Sam, coming to CBS, follows a daughter who takes over a hospital surgery ward her father ran before he fell in, and out of, a coma. Skye P. Marshall plays play Dr. Lex Trulie, an ambitious surgeon. What makes the role so unique for Marshall is that the actress actually has some real-life medical training.

“This is definitely a full-circle moment because I used to work in a hospital,” she shared during the series’ panel at CBS TV Press Tour. “I used to be in the U.S. Air Force, and worked in the hospital there, and I bounced around a bunch of different clinics, from family practice to ER to pediatrics.”

After her military stint, Marshall dabbled in plastic surgery. “It was called the Liposuction Institute, but we called it the Lipo Hut, just to be fun,” she recalls with a laugh.

It’s been a surreal experience for Marshall to be back in scrubs.”I was the bar-back of the OR. I touched everything that wasn’t sterile. I would just idolize these surgeons being able to build these bodies.” Even though it was elective surgery, she can relate to the feeling of balancing life and death.

“Having someone’s heart in your hands, imagining that feeling and what surgeons go through constantly … being able to master that timing of thought and action and trust with your team of surgeons,” says Marshall, “that choreography in the OR, it’s like a dance routine. And it becomes so fun when we nail it.”

Good Sam premieres on Jan. 5 on CBS.
