To attend the special screening of Love To Love You, Donna Summer, the new HBO documentary that brings together pieces of the entertainer’s life, I couldn’t decide between a black or gold dress. After all, I wanted to give “Queen of Disco” her rightful due.

The film, co-directed by Summer’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano and Roger Ross Williams, captures Summer’s joys and struggles in her journey to success. Love To Love You delves into Summer’s life through her own account and interviews with family, friends and her closest colleagues.

Sudano spoke with the DivaGals on the red carpet inside the Edison Ballroom in New York City.  She was joined by Ross Williams, producer David Blackman and family and friends.

“She was an incredible woman and to see her story played out and be so impactful to people even today is just really the most amazing feeling,” shared Sudano about seeing her mother on screen.

“I have always wanted to make a film about Donna Summer,” said Ross Williams. “I’m a huge fan and when I met Brooklyn, my dream came true.”

Summer’s journey led her to Germany and back to America where she became famous for hits like “Love to Love You Baby,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and “She Works Hard for the Money.”

The film shows her love for her children and for her music and art. It also delves into her challenges, including a lawsuit with her record label to be compensated for her work; how she experienced abuse throughout her life; and her battle with lung cancer.

Summer passed away in May 2012 at the age of 63.

Ross Williams said he wants people to know more about Summer. “That she’s not only the ‘Queen of Disco,’ (but) is an incredible artist,” he said.  “She won the first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.”

Sudano hopes to create new projects about her mother with her artwork and through a potential biopic or limited series.

By the way, I wore the gold.
