Mama I Want To Sing!

Mama! I Want To Sing! has returned its home base, New York City’s Heckler Theater (now known as El Museo’s El Teatro) where it first premiered in 1983! The musical tells the story of Doris Troy, the amazing R&B singer who rose to fame with the 1963 hit “Just One Look,” which she wrote and performed. The biographical musical, written by her baby sister Vy Higginsen, calls for a young singer with a five-octave vocal range to appear in the lead role, no easy feat! But for the show’s director Ahmaya Knoelle—Higginsen’s daughter and Doris’ niece—a trip to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts rendered not one – but three lovely young rising stars to alternate in the role.

The performance TV DivaGal attended (with a special guest, her own mama!), Asa Sulton astounded the audience with her incredible pipes on the infamously high notes of the musical’s titular song, which she did with ease and maturity. And we got a laugh watching this star-in-the-making pretending to dial a phone in one scene. LaGuardia classmates Faith Cochrane and Elisa Silva also star and all these talented young ladies are following in great footsteps. Celebrities who have played Doris include Tisha Campbell and Knoelle herself.

The special 40th-anniversary production includes Higginsen as the show’s narrator and a special appearance by Sing Harlem Choir, who recently appeared on America’s Got Talent.
