NBC Upfront 2019 – Kal Penn Leads A Diverse Cast On Sunnyside. Songwriters Get Their Own Competition Show!By Maureen Martin | May 15, 2019 | Entertainment
NBCUniversal kicks off Upfront Week and they’re presenting a delishly diverse slate.
We’re so looking forward to Songland, which is kind of like The Voice but is focused more on “the song” and undiscovered songwriters who pitch/sell their original creations to superstar recording artists and a panel of chart-topping music producers in hopes of creating that artists’ next megahit.
The star artists — who include John Legend Macklemore, will.i.am, Aloe Blacc, Leona Lewis and more — will each choose three songwriters to take their favorite ideas to the next level. Pairing each songwriter with one of the three producers the likes of Grammy winner Ryan Tedder and┬áGrammy-nominated Ester Dean, songwriter of hits for Rihanna and Katy Perry, contestant are tasked with tailoring and evolve their songs to perfectly fit their star artists, who will then choose one winning song to record and release worldwide. Sounds good to us! We’re guaranteed to watch at least one episode.
The Biggest Loser returns along with USA’s Mr. Robot starring Oscar winner Rami Malek. This will be the last season for the latter.
Nowhere To Hide on Telemundo is a 10-part limited series that we are is on our “Must Watch” list. It’s the most watched series in the country! The story revolves around a woman targetted by a hitman for assassination but in a twist of fate… well, we don’t want to spoil it for you!
Rosario Dawson joins NBCUniversal as actor and producer on USA and SYFY channel’s Briarpatch, a tale about a woman returning to her hometown to unravel the mystery surrounding her sister’s death and get revenge.
Resident Alien comes to SYFY channel, and this is the kind of alien the kind you want to be deported. It’s a space alien hiding in a remote town and pretending to be a doctor with a mission to annihilate humanity.
NBC has greenlit Council of Dads. The title alone lets you know you will be in tears and if you are not you are basically dead inside. This family drama is about a family dealing with a terminal cancer diagnosis for the patriarch and his attempts to provide guidance, love and support for his family in his absence.
The network is also bringing Lincoln, based on the nineties film Bone Collector (with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie). The hour-long drama stars one of our favorite actors Russell Hornsby. Indebted brings Fran Drescher and Steven Weber back to TV as broke baby boomers forced to move in with their grown children.
Here are more shows to check out across NBCUniversal’s platforms:
Bluff City Law stars Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee as a father and daughter legal team who also battle one another. We love the diverse cast which includes MaameYaa Boafo.
Perfect Harmony is about choir with Bradley Whitford as a retired and down on his luck Ivy league choirmaster who takes on a motley choir and whips them into musical shape. In the process, he finds his own inspiration and creates some major hallelujah!
Sunnyside stars Kal Penn as an adult education teacher in Queens, New York, teaching citizenship classes to a motley crew of immigrants. There is the “Crazy Rich Asian,” a designer obsessed brother and sister duo, a Latina character with five jobs, a nerdy African and a macho Slavic … yeah, we know, but it’s worth a watch.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is an untraditional musical which kind of reminds us of CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with a touch of What Women Want. It’s fun and stars Mary Steenburgen.
Canadian YouTube sensation Lily Singh makes her late-late-late night debut with a talk show. It’s going to be infused with lots of her trademark humor and sketch comedy.
