NEW YEAR, NEW BATWOMAN 2021! Watch Javicia Leslie Tonight on The CW!

Divas! Batwoman returns for season 2 this even on The CW. But our Batwoman has a new face! The role has been taken over by Javicia Leslie, who we last saw on the CBS series God Friended Me. Javicia plays Ryan Wilder, who is stepping into the suit after the departure of Ruby Rose as Kate Kane. And she is well-prepared to take on the crime-fighter.

At The CW TV Press Tour Winter 2021, Javicia shared that she and her friends used to pretend to be superheroes as kids. “We didn’t have money, so we had to use our imagination,” she declared. That means turning cardboard boxes into superhero gear. “I’ve always imagined the roles that I would play would come from that type of world.”

One of the nice things about Javicia taking over the role is that a queer actress stays in the lead. And she’s the first out black, queer actress to step into a superhero role on TV. “It’s an honor, but it’s frustrating that this is a first,” Javicia declared. She’s proud of the show creators who are taking this chance and movement in the industry. Growing up, “I didn’t see versions of myself on the screen. There were two black female superheroes, and Halle Berry played both.” Javicia is pleased to be that vessel and we “deserve to have representation.”

Batwoman, season two, premieres tonight, Sunday, January 17 at 8 pm ET.
