Project Runway’s Afa Ah Loo Responds To Fans Who Say Judges Eliminated Him To Soon – DivaGals EXCLUSIVE!By Delaina Dixon | April 11, 2019 | Entertainment
On Project Runway‘s “Survive In Style” challenge, Afa Ah Loo was eliminated for his design, something that has not gone over well with fans. On a recent poll conducted by Goldderby.com, 94 percent of fans believe that the judges eliminated the wrong contestant for the challenge — that’s a pretty big number. The DivaGals wanted to know more about how Afa felt about his elimination and fan support, so we asked him!
“I couldn’t agree more with everybody, I think I was eliminated too soon,” Afa declares to us. But he chalks it up to personal taste. “Not everyone’s going to understand and appreciate what you create and that’s totally fine. As a creator, you have a different way of looking at things and not everybody is going to love it.”
Afa also chalks it up to not fully understanding the challenge. “It was never given to us that we were supposed to do survival in the winter. For me, I did survival of the girl I knew and understood. I felt like I was punished for something I believed in.”
To move past it, Afa reminds himself that adoration — and rejection — is a part of the industry. “People are going to hate it or love it. It has been a great learning experience for me. [The fans] are hating that I was eliminated so early and that makes me happy. People understand and value what I do as a designer, that makes me super grateful.”
And some good news has come out of Afa’s short time on the series. “Being on Project Runway has given me a platform to do what I love even more,” he shares. “I’m relaunching and rebranding my company, and I’m having a fashion show in Utah this weekend.”
Afa is offering a collection of mens and womenswear and explains his brand is for people who are fully aware of their bodies and not afraid of what they have. “With this fashion show, you’ll see women from every background, every height, every size. Some of these models haven’t even walked a runway, and that’s fine by me. I want my clothes to be worn by everybody.”
As for his celebrity muses, we couldn’t be more impressed with the list. “I would love to dress Viola Davis or Octavia Spencer. If Michelle Obama was the only celebrity I could dress for the rest of my life, I’d be a happy man and go to designer heaven!”
The only bad news for us? Afa’s Saturday show is already sold out! But we can see the designer’s offering on his website, afaahloo.com. “All the looks from my collection will be made available for preorder the week after the show.”
Oh, and if you’re listening Project Runway, Afa is ready for his redemption song on Project Runway All-Stars. We’d definitely watch for that!
