After a fight with lung cancer, George “Funky” Brown, the drummer, founder member, and primary songwriter of the pop-R&B group Kool & The Gang, passed away in Los Angeles Friday night. He was seventy-four.

As a songwriter, Brown performed alongside lead vocalist James “J.T.” Taylor, bassist Robert “Kool” Bell, tenor Ronald Bell, and brother Brown on tenor. The group’s singles included “Get Down on It,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Jungle Boogie,” and Celebration.

All told, Kool & the Gang was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, received seven American Music Awards, and won two Grammys. Over 70 million records were sold globally, with 7.5 million in the United States.

Just last month, Brown discussed his fight with cancer in an interview with KCAL News. He is survived by his wife and five kids.
