The mecha anime Gurren Lagann delivered a motivational that helped me get through the day: “Believe in the Me that Believes in You!” It’s what’s on anime fans’ minds as they gathered at Anime NYC for a special anniversary panel of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann.

In attendance were the Studio TRIGGER creatives and crew: the acclaimed director Hiroyuki Imaishi (who directed both productions and the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk 2077), Creative Officer Hiromi Wakabayashi and art director Shigeto Koyama. Studio Trigger and Aniplex also revealed both subbed and dubbed revival screenings of the Gurren Lagann movies in January 2024.

Koyama also dropped this important tidbit: He felt that Gundam had dark-skinned villains and light-skinned heroes; in Gurren Lagann he sought to celebrate darker-skinned heroes while paler humans were the villains.

The two English voice icons also made their way to the stage. Erica Mendez (the cutthroat Ryuko Matoi) and Christine Marie Cabanos (the lovable Mako Mankanshoku) from the satirically sexy, uber-violent Kill la Kill. Mendez, who got a career breakthrough with Ryuko, said, “Ryuko taught me to be brave and stick up for myself.” For Cabanos, “Mako is my personality if you dialed up my personality to 11… being the voice was freeing because I was allowed to be as crazy and wild as I could possibly be.”

Both anime can be streamed on Netflix.
