Ever since Queen Charlotte stormed the castle in search of the “diamond” of the marriage season on the first season of Bridgerton, we’ve wanted to know everything about her and her enduring marriage to King George III. And of course, Shondaland is happy to give it to us!

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story chronicles how Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a German princess, wound up betrothed to his eminency in 1761. And while many facts in the limited series are true: they were married for nearly six decades, they had 15 children and King George wrestled with mental demons, the creatives tell us right up front they’ve taken creative license with how they’re telling this tale, and we’re most grateful for it.

One of their most compelling notes is  Queen Charlotte’s roots. According to historian Mario de Valdes y Cocom for PBS’ Frontline, Queen Charlotte was directly descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a Black branch of the Portuguese royal house, which means this highness is POC, something that has been reflected in Bridgerton casting. India Amarteifio plays young Charlotte, who proves in the first few minutes of episode 1 that this lady had her own thoughts on fashion and relationships … way before she took the crown.

One thing we’ve come to expect from the Bridgerton series is bodice-clutching romance, and there’s no lack here. Corey Mylchreest is our oh-so-handsome young King George III, and it’s easy to understand why it’s love at first sight for the two. We also meet a young Agatha Danbury (played by Arsema Thomas) and young Violet Ledger. The show gives us much of their back history of how they came to be who they are in Briadgerton and sets up some shocking connections that are ripe to play out in its future seasons.

For die-hard Bridgerton fans, this is a fun (and fast) diversion from the main storyline that gives some much-welcomed backstory to characters we already loved. For those new to the series, it’s an interesting, albeit fictitious examination of how aristocratic people of color navigated royal racism and microaggressions.
