Guest contributor Erika K. Crocco shares her experience at Peter Pan Goes Wrong on Broadway!

I remember first hearing about The Play That Goes Wrong and recalling what all the hype is about? After googling the previews, my reaction was I MUST see this play.

Fast forward four weeks later and there I was in fourth-row orchestra seats with my daughter, and I watched them pull an unsuspecting member out of the audience to be a part of the show. From that point on, the show did not disappoint. Tears were streaming out of the eyes of the audience from immense laughter. I had hoped when we left the theater that The Mischief Theatre Company would return to New York City and give us more of their talent. Peter Pan Goes Wrong does just that.

Attending the June 9 performance, once again with my daughter who was just as excited as I was to see the performers again, we were back in the orchestra. From the moment the narrator stepped onto the stage and the lights blew out, the laughs started and did not stop.

The actors’ comedic timing and physical comedy were off the wall—literally—as many of them were lifted and thrashed into walls while dangling from wires. Their physical comedic timing reminded me of many of the great actors of my generation such as Robin Williams and John Ritter. The actors’ energy to run around the stage while it spins night after night is outright amazing. They keep the comedy going and the audience laughing while running around in circles.

Add to this some very funny lines, great costumes and sets that fall apart around them (and on them!), and you have another smash hit on your hands. I must add a shout-out to the actress Bianca Horn who does the quickest theater costume changes that I have ever seen. Wow, girl, we were so impressed with how fast you move. Bravo!

Another shout out to actor Fred Gray who plays the role of Max with such sweetness that you almost want to reach onto the stage and hug him. Add these two to an amazing cast and you have another hit on your hands.

My daughter and I waited outside at the stage door where every single cast member came out to give autographs with smiles and appreciation. They took pictures, shook hands and thanked everyone for coming. You do not get that often with Broadway. Another special shout-out to the tech crew for having to put that stage back together night after night. The set is amazingly designed and must be a pain to put back together.

My only regret with Peter Pan Goes Wrong is that the show does not have enough time on Broadway: it’s closing at the end of July. I wish that it had a longer run so that more people could enjoy the amazingness of this cast and crew. My hope is that they will not be away from Broadway long. It needs to come back with another smash hit that’s just as much fun as Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Play That Goes Wrong. Let’s hope, for Broadway’s sake, there will not be as much time in between as there was the last time.

My suggestion? See Peter Pan Goes Wrong for laughs, surprises and fun and a great evening on the town. You will not be disappointed.

Catch Peter Pan Goes Wrong at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway through July 23. Then catch the show at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles from August 8 to September 10.
