WHAT TO WATCH TONIGHT: How The Biggest Loser On USA Can Help You Transform In Real Life!

By Delaina Dixon   |   January 28, 2020   |   Celebrity & Culture

Divas, The Biggest Loser is back on TV. Ten new contestants are joining #WBWD Bob Harper and two new trainers to change their lives by shedding the excess. But it’s not a concept fully embraced by all.

At NBCUniversal Press Tour, fellow journalists were particularly hard on the series’ cast, calling out how past seasons of the show had former contestants engaging in unhealthy practices to drop weight quickly — all in the name of taking home that big cash prize. The vitriol from journalists was so strong, it was evident the cast on stage was getting a bit uncomfortable.

Being in the fitness industry myself, I couldn’t take it anymore when a reporter suggested that regular people have no time to work out as the contestants do. Of course we don’t! That’s when I grabbed the mic and asked while viewers weren’t expected to work out five hours a day like series’ contestants, would we glean anything from the show to improve our own lifestyles?

Harper replied that one big change — social media — would allow the series to reach people and bring healthy tips that can be incorporated into everyday life, in smaller increments. “We can share recipes and workouts, which we couldn’t do before,” he shared.

As for the show leaving contestants voted off early in the lurch, the cast shared that those contestants will be given an aftercare package that includes a gym membership, a nutritionist and guidance towards a support group, to deal with issues that keep people from choosing a healthier lifestyle.

The Biggest Loser is also focusing more on nutrition by making sure that contestants don’t fall below a certain amount of calories to lose weight. As I spoke with new trainers Steve Cook and Erica Lugo at the NBCUni mixer, they shared that we’ll also get to see how to work out even when you can’t get on your feet. Hey, any show that supports us — especially TV reporters — to get off the couch and moving has got to be a good thing!

The Biggest Loser premieres Jan. 28 at 9/8c on NBC. Read our series “The Comeback” from our own Image Gal Samantha Bessudo Drucker to learn how she’s transforming her life through diet and exercise this year.
