Will Friends Make It Back To TV… And Finally Add Black People?

Divas! We love Friends just as much as anyone! It’s been off the air for almost 20 years… but was ready to make its comeback.

As a series with one of the most-watched final episodes (with over 52.46 million viewers), it isn’t surprising that fans all over the world were excited to hear rumors of a possible reunion special. The rumor turned out to be true and was later confirmed by the main cast through their official Instagram accounts earlier this year. However, to the dismay of many, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the unscripted special – which was supposed to be filmed on March 23 and 24 – has been delayed indefinitely due to the ongoing global health crisis. Just like Friends, most, if not all, current productions have been halted in compliance with the social distancing and self-quarantine protocols that have been put in place by the government.

Once productions go back to normal, the special will reunite our favorite characters: Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courteney Cox), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow),  Joey (Matt LeBlanc),  Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Ross (David Schwimmer). The main cast will each earn more than twice their former per-episode fee for the special and be paid between $2.5 million and $3 million, a price the group negotiated together.

According to the Insider, the unscripted special will be filmed at Warner Bros. Studio’s Stage 24 in Burbank, California, where the original series was taped. The special will see the cast reminisce about their time on ‘Friends’ and will be directed by Ben Winston of The Late Late Show with James Corden. He will also be the executive producer for the reunion.

The special is definitely a big deal for HBO Max, which is set to launch in May. After all, the reunion is the kind of event that will help increase the number of subscribers. HBO Max will combine HBO’s illustrious archive with a host of new shows and films, in addition to brand new movies and original series from Warner Bros. While the special has been delayed, the new streaming site promises fans that they can re-watch all 236 episodes of the original series upon its launch. We’re hoping Friends can do a lot better this time around with its POC guest cast. David Schwimmer recently admitted that he had to fight for Ross to have girlfriends of color on the show. Maybe we’ll see the return of Aisha Tyler, who played Ross’ perfectly aligned paleontology professor girlfriend Charlie Wheeler.

We’ve already waited for more than 15 years for this reunion; a few more months won’t impact our loyalty to the sitcom. While we wait, consider checking out variety of different themed merchandise the show spawned or games hosted on Foxy Bingo. Pledge your loyalty to any of the six members and finally settle the debate between Team Phoebe or Team Rachel!

If you want to watch another group of friends who are much more diverse, check out Mindy Kaling‘s series Four Weddings and a Funeral which follows several friends discovering love and life in London, now streaming on Hulu.
