After The Devil Wears Prada 2, Here’s Another Early Aughts Sequel that Needs to be in Your Mother’s Day Rotation

Thanks to movies like The Devil Wears Prada 2, which took home the top box office spot opening weekend, sequels to early aughts classics are all the rage. In other words, the “legacyquel” is having a renaissance. Whether it’s because we’re nostalgic for the easy-going, social media-free vibes of the era or yearning for movies to feel like a group event again, audiences are begging their favorite 2000s celebrities to reprise their classic roles on screen.
If watching the credits roll at the end of The Devil Wears Prada 2 left you wanting more of that nostalgia kick, then we suggest adding last year’s big 2000’s movie sequel, Freakier Friday, to your watchlist with Mom. It’s an update that Grandma, Mom, and Daughter can enjoy together—combining the classic unhinged body-swapping plot with modern fashion and slang but with the same heart.
The updated take on “stepping into each other’s shoes” reunited Jaime Lee Curtis and 2000s it-girl Lindsay Lohan as the mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman 22 years after the original Freaky Friday hit theaters. You can feel the instantly rekindled chemistry they have together on screen, even as they take on new roles as grandmother and mother to a younger, equally as rebellious generation.
Speaking of that, the sequel introduced us to some newer faces in Hollywood, including actress Julia Butters, who plays Anna’s daughter, Harper Coleman and Sophia Hammons, who plays stepdaughter Lily Reyes. Rounding out the cast is Manny Jacinto, who plays love interest Eric Reyes. The dynamic between them all feels effortless as they juggle jokes and heart-to-heart moments.
If you’ve ever heard of Freaky Friday, you pretty much have the basic plot down already (body-swapping chaos). But here’s the extra twist: not only do they endure pretending to be each other as life goes on around them, they have to deal with one sticky issue in the family: stepsisters-to-be Harper and Lily don’t click with each other, and the girls’ plan to keep Eric and Anna away from each other for good may backfire.
The core of the movie is really the girls’ relationships with their parents and each other—even if it takes mind-swapping to bring everyone together—which gives the comedy film the feel-good energy of a comfort watch. But what really pulls this sequel into the current moment is the blended family storyline and showing the little quirks that it takes to make it work. It makes the film feel less like a straight rinse and repeat and more like an extension of the original. Moms who saw the original in theaters will love all the little nods to the first film, and the younger generation will like the jokes written with their taste in mind. In other words, this is your sign to add it to your Mother’s Day rotation while Mom enjoys breakfast in bed.
As Lohan was basking in the glory of her well-recieved return to the big screen, the actress emphasized that she wanted the film “to spread love and spread joy and bring people together to laugh and have fun and just let go for a minute and just zone out and enjoy.”
Honestly? That sounds like the perfect Mother’s Day vibe to us.
