It’s #TransformationTuesday Divas! New Mom loves to hear how other mothers are raising their children while living busy and fulfilling lives. Today, we talk with Broadway star N’Kenge, who starred as Mary Wells in Motown the Musical.
Now the mother of one is recording a new album with an indie crowd-funding label and traveling the country performing on major orchestra stages. All the while caring for her 13-month-old daughter Jahzara Martina!
N’Kenge shares her secrets to balancing motherhood with her career life, and doing it while looking fabulous!
Working With Baby. I travel to a lot of orchestra engagements, and she travels with me wherever I go. I have an amazing husband who travels with me. This month I’m singing with the Indianapolis Symphony. I’m going to Montana in December to do a Christmas concert there, and of course, she’ll be with me!
My New Baby! I’m working with the label Angel Like Rebels. It’s an indie label that wants to empower artists. They have a crowd equity campaign, and money comes from crowd funding. Anyone who becomes an angel and puts money in also get points, which can go to 20 percent net royalties on merchandising and albums, etc. It’s not just about believing in an artist, it’s investing in them. [As of this interview] I’ve raised 16K.
Getting In Shape Post-Baby. I don’t have time to go to the gym, so it’s me making my way through the city, pushing her stroller. You need to see how I walk down the streets of New York City with that stroller; literally, I’m going faster than everyone around me. And I’m dancing in my orchestra shows. I try to get to the gym, maybe when I’m staying in hotel. But it’s hard to have a set schedule.
Beautiful Babe! I never leave home without BB cr├¿me on my face — it gives you a little extra tint and glow. I’ve been using IMAN BB Cr├¿me┬á ΓÇô she sponsored the makeup for Motown.┬á I did an event at Barney’s and got introduced to the La Mer hydrating mask that you don’t take off. It’s supposed to seriously moisturize. Me being on the run, I always feel my skin needs to be hydrated, so having a mask that you can keep on and have that extra moisturizing effect, I’m like, “Yes, thank you!” I take off my makeup with Neutrogena wipes, it takes off everything, even the mascara.
Hair Au Natural. I had been wearing extensions and color up until I got pregnant. It was the first time seeing my natural curls, and I don’t think I’m ever going to go back. I’ve been using Miss Jessie’s, Mixed Chicks and Moroccanoil. I’ve discoverd a fabulous product Eco Bodhi. It’s all natural and vegan-free, their actual containers are all recyclable. They make these moisturizing creams that for your body and hair and are safe for your baby. It’s made with shea butter. I’ve used it on my hair and for a diaper rash cream. It moisturizes everything!
Tasty Treats. I make homemade baby food for my daughter. It’s been really easy to do with the Beaba Babycook because it’s an all in one system. You can steam and pur├⌐e in the same container. Sometimes I do a separate menu for her and other times I use food I’m already cooking for myself. When I’m on the go I have snacks that I take that she loves such as the Gerber Lil’ Crunchies, yogurt blends and their organic fruit & veggies. Of course I always have fresh fruit too.
Baby No. Two? I was one of those career women who planned, and thought I’m not going to have a baby right now because I’m working on my career. Then I had the baby, and I’m still going strong with my career. I feel if you have the right support system in place ΓÇô I had my mother-in-law come stay with us ΓÇô if you have it, you can be a career woman and mother and a great wife. Women in general are such great multitaskers, we can be cooking and feeding our baby and taking a conference call all at the same time!
