There are over 600 homicides connected to hip hop culture, making this tragedy all too common. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, along with executive producer Mona Scott Young are trying to shed some light on the situation with their new series, Hip Hop Homicides. “It enlightens everybody on the overall situation, the loss of loved ones,” Jackson shared at an intimate screening event in New York City. “[Our series] gives you a closer look at who the artist was and leaves a little more legacy.”

Scott-Young opened up about how the series is part tribute and part investigative reporting, saying, “we really wanted to find a way to not only uncover new leads or provide some measure of answers if not closure for family, friends and fans, but also find a way to keep those memories and to get to know them in different ways.”
This week’s upcoming episode features the life of Magnolia Shorty, a New Orleans-based rapper who was shot multiple times on December 20, 2010. She was one of the first women signed to Cash Money Records, and her 1997 debut album Monkey on the Dick (often stylized Monkey On Tha D$ck) is considered a bounce classic. her music has been sampled by Drake and Big Freedia.
