TV SUMMER TOUR ’14: ABC Star Cristela’s Comic Inspirations!

Comedic genius is often inspired. So we asked Cristela Alonzo, who stars on the new ABC sitcom Cristela, who are the funny people she admires.

“I love Lucille [Ball],” Cristela exclaimed to TV DivaGal at the ABC Summer Press party. Much like the redheaded comic icon, who became a legend starring as a quirky gal dealing with her everyday life, on her new show, Cristela balances her career as an unpaid law firm intern with the crazy demands of her Mexican-American family. She also had praise for fellow funny woman Carol Burnett. The comedienne created and executive produces the new series.

Cristela’s highest praise was for someone else who tapped into their roots to find truth in their comedy in vehicles like Everybody Hates Chris. “I love Chris Rock. He’s so good about being honest about where he comes from, and he does it in such a funny and smart way, that I always thought I want to be that.”

A sitcom with your name in the title? Me thinks you’ve done just that Cristela!

Cristela premieres Friday, Oct. 10 on ABC.
