What To See This Weekend – BlacKkKlansman. Dog Days. Mind Your Own Business with Mahisha on OWN!

SEE. BlacKkKlansman is a melodramatic film set in the groovy ’70s. It’s written and produced by Spike Lee and Oscar-winning Jordan Peele (Get Out). You’ll enjoy the afros, fashion, cars and references to blaxploitation films like Shaft and everything starring the iconic Pam Grier. You won’t want to laugh, but there is humor in this film. There are some deep truths revealed in the open racism, denigration and disrespect of black people. After two hours, you are desensitized to the often-used “N” word and the prose used by supremacists in discussing black people. Maybe the laughter will help us all speak openly and address societal wrongs. The plot of the movie is based on the book of the same name. It’s about a real-life black cop, Ron Stallworth, and his Jewish partner who go undercover to infiltrate the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. In telling the story, there are references to iconic films like Birth of a Nation, a rallying cry for supremacists with a cameo by Alec Baldwin reciting a racist speech and firing up to his perceived “superior” audience. Most of the white characters in the film are “over-the-top” racists, and the Black people are just trying to live, unite and stay alive. It’s a sullen reminder that things haven’t changed much, but we are all just more polite. The cast includes John David Washington (Denzel‘s son!) Laura Harrier, Topher Grace, and an incredible performance by Adam Driver.

SEE too. Looking for a palate cleanser after the intensity of BlacKKKlansman? The new rom-com Dog Days is a star-studded romantic comedy about singles with dogs who are fumbling with commitment. Set in Los Angeles, the film follows the intertwined lives of several people and their canine companions. The stories include a TV host and her new co-anchor who are forced to work together, a barista who finds a stray dog and falls for a dog rescue owner, a couple learning to connect with their newly adopted daughter, and a widower who forms an unlikely friendship with a young pizza delivery boy after losing his beloved pug. Through a series of chance encounters and the universal language of dog-loving, the characters find love, connection and a little bit of happiness in the chaos of their lives.
